Welcome to the Sentinel Network

Welcome to the Sentinel Network: A Guide to Beekeeping.cloud

This entry provides a brief overview of the Beekeeping.cloud platform, its core mission, and how you can contribute to the regional effort to protect our honeybee populations from invasive species like the Asian Hornet (Vespa velutina).

The Mission: Community-Led Vigilance

Beekeeping.cloud is a strategic tool designed for the Dromore Beekeepers Association and the wider community. Its purpose is to create a living map of invasive hornet activity, allowing us to track threats, coordinate responses, and protect our vital pollinators. This is achieved through a "Sentinel Network"—a series of digital markers that represent real-world monitoring and confirmed sightings.

Understanding the Sentinel Network

Our network is composed of three primary types of nodes:

  • Lure Stations: These are physical traps or monitoring stations set up by registered association members, typically in private apiaries or gardens. They are our first line of defense.
  • Nest Reports: These are confirmed locations of active Asian Hornet nests. They represent a high-priority threat and require immediate attention.
  • Sighting Reports: These are individual observations of Asian Hornets. They provide crucial data points that help us understand flight paths and foraging areas.

How You Can Help: Anonymous Reporting

Every member of the public can become a vital part of this network. If you believe you have seen an Asian Hornet or a potential nest, you can submit a report.

  1. Navigate to /submit: Use our simple, map-based reporting tool.
  2. Select a Location: Pinpoint the exact location of your observation.
  3. Provide Details: Choose the type of report (Lure, Nest, or Sighting) and optionally add a description or an image URL as evidence.

Your submission is sent to a regional coordinator for verification. It will not appear on the public map until it is confirmed, ensuring the integrity of our data.

Our Commitment to Your Privacy

We take member privacy and public safety seriously. The public Sentinel Map (/map) operates under a strict Spatial Privacy Protocol:

  • To protect the sensitive locations of private apiaries, the map pins for Lure Stations are intentionally displaced using a random offset. You see the general area of vigilance, not the precise location.
  • For public safety and rapid response, confirmed Nest Reports and Sighting Reports are always displayed at their exact, verified coordinates.

Becoming a Registered Member

While public reporting is anonymous, joining the association as a registered member provides you with enhanced access. By navigating to /login and selecting "Request Access", you can apply for an account.

Once your account is approved by a coordinator, you will be able to:

  • Register and manage your own personal sentinel nodes.
  • Join local associations to coordinate with fellow beekeepers.
  • Communicate directly with coordinators about your active nodes.

Thank you for your vigilance. Together, we can protect the hive.
